Students, faculty and staff all need to know where to go and what to do during an emergency. Before a crisis occurs, take some time to become familiar with the ways to respond to potential emergencies.

WashU has a dedicated emergency preparedness website, emergency.wustl.edu, that offers a great deal of resources.

Safety and Security

Because the safety and security of our students is of primary concern, the university suggests taking the following precautions while on or off campus:

  • Always choose a well-lit path for walking or jogging
  • Carry a whistle to summon help
  • Be alert to your surroundings.  If you suspect you are being followed, run in a different direction; go to the other side of the street and yell or whistle for help; or head quickly to a lighted area, a group of people, or business
  • Be extra cautious if someone approaches your car and asks for information
  • If you are confronted by a thief, give them what they want and don’t chase them as they leave.  Report suspicious persons or activity immediately to the police
  • Call 55555 to request an escort to your car or shuttle when leaving a campus building at any time
  • Consider using the Campus2Home shuttle service.

The Washington University Police Department site is an excellent resource for prevention and reporting tips.

Our hope is that students will never have to use these resources, however should incidents occur, report them immediately to Danielle Bristow, assistant dean of academic and student affairs, who will provide support and referral assistance.
